GUISSMO

Hey there, here are the software and the apps that I use. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about it!

Software / Apps

For the software, I added little emoji icons to signify the following:

  • πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»: Need to be somewhat comfortable with computers.
  • 🫢: Free, as in libre. Open-source.
  • πŸ†“: Free, as in you don’t pay.
  • πŸ’³: Paid, also see the section below.

OS

  • Kubuntu πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” I got used to Kubuntu, I don’t feel like it’s heavy like the vanilla Ubuntu. And it is not so difficult to update like when I used Arch Linux.

Search Engine

  • Kagi πŸ’³ β€” unlimited, paid search engine that is not powered by ads. I can ban, rank and derank websites in my search results, plus it has opt-in AI features.

Mail

Photos

  • Immich πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” self-hosted photo viewing software that has a mobile app. I like Immich’s AI features (such as face recognition) and the fact that I’m pretty sure my data stays within my server. Unlike Google Photos and Apple Photos where they can train whatever AI they want on it. #immich

Document Management

  • Paperless πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” self-hosted open-source document management system that lets me dump my documents, forget them, and then search through its contents later after it’s OCR’d and indexed my documents. Open-source, so my documents are private.

Generative AI

  • Open Router πŸ’³ β€” prepaid credits for API, paired with an installation of OpenWebUI.
  • Open Web UI πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” self-hosted front-end for LLMs. I bring my OpenRouter API key and it works.

Docker Management

  • Portainer πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” self-hosted open-source Docker management system. Lets me install new containers via Docker compose through its UI. No need to go to the terminal!

Password and 2FA

  • Bitwarden πŸ’³ β€” password manager that also incorporates 2FA.

Music

  • Jellyfin πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” self-hosted media system software. I mainly use this as a replacement for Spotify to play music that I own. Spotify and other media services tend to randomly disable (?) or delete (?) some of my favorite songs so I decided to just use my actual files.

Blogging

  • Astro πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” web framework specialized on static websites that I use to generate most of this website

Reading

  • FreshRSS πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” self-hosted RSS and Atom feed aggregator. Mobile UI is ok but could use some improvement.
  • Hoarder πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” read-it-later app that has AI tagging.
    • I used to recommend Omnivore, but since the company hosting it got sold and decided to stop the service, goodbye!

Alumni

  • Wallabag πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” read-it-later app that just works. No AI tagging though, so I stopped using it.

FileSync

  • Syncthing πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” open-source self-hosted encrypted continuous file synchronization program. #syncthing
  • Before this, I used:
    • Dropbox πŸ’³ β€” the classic. Will probably eventually delete this account in favor of Syncthing.

Recipe Organization

  • Cooklang / Cooklang CLI πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” recipe markup language with a CLI version that serves a simple webpage displaying recipes

Notes

  • Logseq πŸ†“ β€” open-source app which I chose because your notes are in Markdown. If one day they stop supporting it, I would still have my notes!
    • Logseq Sync πŸ’³ β€” $5 / month. Used to sync Logseq graphs.
  • Before this, I used:
    • Joplin πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” open-source notetaking app. Simpler than Logseq and free hassle-free sync feature. Good if you don’t want to go deep and technical. Moved away from this because I found Logseq’s customizability better.

IDE

  • VS Code πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»πŸ«ΆπŸ†“ β€” IDE
  • Before this, I used:

Hardware

Laptop

  • Lenovo Thinkpad E485 β€” bought in 2018 with the Lenovo student discount in the Netherlands with all specs maximized, changed the battery twice and it’s still chugging.

Phone

  • iPhone SE 2022 β€” the only reason I use this is because it is small.
  • Nexus 5X β€” still alive, used mainly for trying out other OS’s. Currently using LineageOS.

USB Cables

  • Anker nylon cables (1.8m)
    • 1 USB-C to USB-A
    • 1 USB-C to USB-C
    • 1 USB-C to Lightning
    • 1 USB-A to Micro-USB

eReader

  • Kobo Clara 2E β€” very customizable eReader. #kobo

Paid Services / Subscriptions

I keep track of my subscriptions here so that I also know how much I’m spending per month.

Annual

Grand total of around 170 dollars per year, or around 14 dollars per month.

Monthly

Grand total of around 22 euros per month.

  • ionos β€” € 16,80 / month (with a one-year lock-in) the VPS L instance that hosts this website, and a bunch of other open-source self-hosted apps like Immich, Paperless, etc.
  • Logseq Sync β€” $5 / month. Used to sync Logseq graphs.
